ABOUT CAY DENISE MACKENZIE:
In the late 1990s, I was a
professional musician. Driving to the beach one day, a
thought emerged from over my shoulder suggesting I
quilt…but there was no one else in the car at the time.
Not surprisingly, I wondered where that thought had come
from especially since I didn’t know how to sew. Within
a few short months, I sold my trumpet, cornet and
flugelhorn, and purchased a sewing machine. Since that
time, I have never looked back.
That was the beginning of
a new chapter in my life. Through Quilt Art, the
floodgates to greater self-expression opened. My inner
critic, a once ruthless saboteur, was quieted and has
become a more supportive presence.
I find great delight now
in how ideas tickle our minds to get our attention, and
the fact that the more we create, the more ideas are
drawn to us for creation. I see more than I used to
see. I create things that surprise, amaze and amuse
me.
In
the creative zone, that place of unbridled creativity, I
work. It is from that place that the music in me
becomes…the visual music I create!
Artist
Statement:
Over the
last decade, my soul’s expressive journey has propelled me
from an avocation as a professional musician to quilt
artist. As an artist, my soul work is to give form to the
unconscious in finished pieces that are lyrical and complex,
have visual balance and are well-crafted. New techniques
inspire me, and figuring out ‘the way’ from idea to form is
my specialty. The imagery in my work ranges from sensitive
to bold, imaginative to whimsical and experimental to
inspired. Using fabric, and select embellishments, I
compose visual music!
